Doolittle House in Joshua Tree - Kendrick Kellogg, Architect

This just went on the market and got all sorts of blog coverage. One thing I find interesting about following certain artists is how you see repeated themes in their work. I think I can recognize one of Kellogg's houses anywhere, now.

I love the roof on this one in particular because it lets in so much natural light, something those of us who live in standard boxes miss. I also really covet that copper fireplace hood.

BONUS! There's video on this house~!

Lotus House - Ken Kellogg, Architect

So, a rare opportunity cropped up for a tour of some of Ken Kellogg's fantastic work. The only one I could get to was the (luckily) the one I wanted to see the most, the Yen House in La Jolla (also called the Poppy House or the Lotus House.)

Pictures from the tour - which supports the Institute for Organic Architecture he is constructing.

Best quote: "Architecture is a love affair with nature."

Atoll House - Kendrick Kellogg, Architect

It's been awhile since we visited the wonders of architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, a favorite of mine and pal of James Hubbell.

His name came back up when I recently got an invitation to tour some of his homes and chat with the architect (pictures and goodies coming!) While this beauty, called the Atoll House (La Jolla, CA), isn't on the itinerary, we do have some eye candy.

Stained glass and chandeliers are by James Hubbell.

Stone Church, Karuizawa - Kendrick Kellogg, Architect

Today's bit of organic architecture goodness is another of Kendrick Kellogg's wonderful architecture. The Stone Church in Karuizawa is created around the 5 elements of stone, wood, sunlight, green, and water to bring the church into harmony with nature.

What I love about this is the way light has been used to fill the chapel and create different moods depending on time of day and season. The stonework is aesthetically breathtaking, as is the use of greenery in the chapel. I especially like the way the Stone Church blends comfortably into the surrounding forest. This is organic architecture at its finest!

High Desert House - Kendrick Kellogg, Architect

The High Desert House designed by Architect Ken Kellogg is another of those structures that I find so visually arresting that I can't take my eyes off it. I have to admit that I'm less of a fan of the interior pictures that I've seen, it's the exterior shapes that my eyes caress lovingly. It might be that the interior just doesn't photograph well, as can be the case in organic structures.

The house is constructed of 26 concrete "wings" designed to capture energy from thermal mass. The wings are separated by glass that provides natural daylighting for the interior.

I simply love the shower rock work and cast fixtures of what I assume is the master bath. The house is near Palm Springs, so I have hope of one day getting to see it in person!

Ken Kellogg - Yen Residence

A recent "find" for me in the world of organic architecture was right here at home in the form of architect Kendrick Kellogg.  Today, a look at the Yen Residence in La Jolla built for neuroendocrinologist Sam Yen. The most startling feature of the house is the roof with integral solar water heated panels that fan out like the petals of a flower.
